Embedded Narrative: Works by Elka Amorim and Isobel Milena
The collaborative team of Isobel Milena, and the Brazilian artist Elka Amorim explore in both form and content the nature of Embedded Narratives. Whether utilizing the schizophrenic feminine presence in our recorded history to convey timeless personal narrative, or illuminating fable to relate parallels and intersections of vastly diverse world legends, these artists bring together unexpected and seemingly irreconcilable elements into an alluring whole.
Pushing collage, montage and assemblage to the boundaries of their definition, Elka and Isobel layer visual languages and materials to construct their own allegorical tales. The result begs conversation regarding the fragmented nature of humanity’s ever-evolving identity. Elka's work reads openly as diary and record of dreams. Her visions weave suburban subtext, religious fetish, and gilded romance to create a collective female memory. Isobel extracts inspiration from resurrection myths, piecing together objects and mediums that revive powerful artifacts of the past. Using motifs from the Victorian era, they juxtapose mythological symbols with images of savage moments in nature.

Emergent
After 10 years as a commercial illustrator extraordinaire, Sterling Clinton Hundley has created a dramatic series of oil paintings for this debut Solo Show. Taking as his title “emergent” (emergence being defined in science as the process of complex systems that are composed of lesser parts) Hundley initiates his creative process with a diminutive monotype (3”x3”) and develops a sequence of progressively larger and complex works. Each painting is constructed on a grid of square panels and inspired by the square that preceded it. The “chaos” of the original image is controlled by the artist's skill at creating and manipulating the visual medium and the imposition of the grid. Hundley navigates the gauntlet of abstraction to arrive just this side of representational.
First Fridays: September 4, 7-10pm
Exhibition: September 4 - 26, 2009
From the cutting edge to established international artists, non-traditional media to oil painting, Ghostprint Gallery synthesizes disparate elements in an enlightened perspective on art itself. |

Main Gallery - Small Works: 1995-2009
Benjamin Jones is an internationally acclaimed artist whose small drawings are full of deep emotion and intricate, yet ambiguous, story lines. The images walk a line between humor and horror, seducing the viewer as he sees bits of themselves, the artist, and the fictional collide.
His unique presentation of small graphite drawings invite you to step inside the sketched lines and meet Jones' characters. Anthropomorphic figures dance throughout complex webs of lines, scribbles, and psychologically loaded etchings. Often eliciting references to children's art, outsider art, and art brut, Jone's work is distinctly recognizable as his own.
Jones' drawings are included in prominent museum collections including the Whitney Museum of Art, Philadelphia Museum of Art, Indianapolis Museum of Art, High Museum of Art, Morris Museum of Art, as well as significant corporate and private collections. He is represented by the Barbara Archer Gallery in Atlanta.
Shop Show - Maggie Smith: My House

Vault Project - Elizabeth Kendall
Kendall transforms clay into different shapes, and is challenged to express the duality of her materialthat it is at the same time hard and soft, rigid and flowing. These components frame a story and are a story in their own right---a language spoken in three dimensions. Vault Project show continues through September 12.

He has performed with Cyril Neville in New Orleans, with Odetta in England, with Virginia's most recent MacArthur Fellow, Corey Harris in Guinea and Sierra Leone and on tour with The Wailers. Labyrinth: John Bailey
A prominent figure in Richmond’s arts community, John Bailey is recognized as an artist who constantly challenges our perceptions and takes drawing to its sensitive best. Presenting selections from his Labyrinth series, Bailey presents a progressive, site-specific installation of drawings, rendered with crayon on panels of polyester chiffon, each 7 feet tall and varying widths. Ordinarily, the drawings are hung with the bottom touching the floor and placed in the space away from the wall, creating a translucent maze of images, with passages through which the view moves freely; however in this installation, the drawings are hung on the wall to take advantage of the Library’s warm yellow light.
Collages: The Virginia Collage Society
The Virginia Collage Society, an affiliate of the National Collage Society, was formed in September 2005 to bring together artists with a mutual interest in the paper arts.
Their first group exhibition at the Richmond Public Library embraces their mission to foster appreciation and interest in the recognized medium of collage, assemblage, and mixed media. For further information visit the VCS website at www.virginiacollagesociety.com
Art Exhibit: A Series of Dynamic Narrative Photographs
William Connally’s work strives to depict locations and characters on the threshold between two different states. The moments depicted are periods of suspension, just before or after an unseen event has occurred, and change is inevitable. All attention is directed to a certain point in each image, which his either concealed by the placement of the objects, figures, and shadows in the scenes, or outside of the frame, and it is up to the audience to construct narratives, given the elements in the photographs.
Voices for Change
In 2008, nearly 8,000 of Virginia's children and youth were in foster care. More than half of those youth are eleven years of age or older, and far too many of them live in group homes and other facilities without any connection to a permanent family. The artwork, photography and writing vary in style, personality and voice, but all of the pieces represent triumphs and struggles of children in foster care.
The "Voices for Change" project invited youth in foster care between the ages of 12 and 21 to submit original artwork, photographs and writing that depicted their experiences across Virginia's foster care system. The competition was sponsored by the Virginia Poverty Law Center (VPLC), Voices for Virginia's Children, ART180, and FACES of Virginia Families.
Winners from the "Voices for Change" competition were chosen by a panel of distinguished judges, including authors, artists and professors from Virginia. Honorees include youth from: Alexandria, Arlington, Charlottesville, Chesterfield, Richmond, Fairfax, Jonesville, Lawrenceville, Lynchburg, Martinsville, Mechanicsville, Portsmouth, Stafford and Waverly.
First Fridays: September 4, 7-9pm
Exhibition: September 4 - 30, 2009
Additional Events:
Voices for Change Reception & Panel Presentation
September 16 between 4pm-6pm features a reception and panel presentation by some of the young artists featured in the Voices for Change exhibition project.
With the capacity to showcase art, music, and literature, the Richmond Public Library offers an enhanced First Fridays experience.
